EPBS program suspension & COVID-19 update

EPBS families and volunteers:

This is an update (with strict guidance from and adherence to Little League International) in regards to the COVID-19 and its current impact on our program and all other Little League programs. While our program is officially on hold, there should be absolutely NO OUTDOOR PRACTICES OR ANY ORGANIZED TEAM ACTIVITIES. Communicating with your team is, of course, encouraged; however, there should be no program activity in a social setting. This is frustrating for all of us, and it hurts to think that the most we can do is practice on our own, of our own volition, with our own children.

Little League International operates more than 6,500 programs in more than 84 countries and has strongly recommended that all Little League teams exercise an abundance of caution and implement a temporary suspension/delay of all program and league activities until no earlier than May 11. Following the latest recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to refrain from gatherings for at least eight weeks, the leadership at Little League International chose the May 11 date to coincide with that guidance. Before governor Pritzker ordered a "shelter in place" for all of Illinois, we indicated that the EPBS program would be delayed until at least March 29; then Little League recommended a hold until April 6. However, they are now advising all programs/leagues to suspend/delay ALL activities until May 11.

Little League International hopes that they can find ways to bring everyone back to the fields this season, whether that’s later this spring or throughout the summer. They will be providing guidance on how programs like ours can operate a modified season that could extend into the summer months in flexible fashion for participants. Regular season activities can extend throughout the summer and fall. Little League International knows that many programs have already ordered equipment, jerseys, and other associated items for the season. Little League International also knows that families will, if they haven’t already, start inquiring about refunds/credits. We respectfully ask that everyone remain patient during this unprecedented time so we can continue to collect information and guidance from Little League International, as we would like to follow their lead in addressing all issues surrounding our program.

The key for all of us is to help prevent the mass spreading of COVID-19 and hopefully get back to normalcy as quickly as possible.  We know this has been difficult and also uncharted territory for all, but we, like Little League International, feel like delaying the season until May 11 is the right move for the time being. If we receive good news from Little League International that our season can resume earlier, we will do so, but any news from Little League International will be updated to you accordingly. We understand the importance of activity, practice, and trying to stay sharp during this off period, but the overall health and wellness of all of our families, friends, and loved ones takes precedence.

Thank you, stay healthy, and Go EP!

Joe Schack, EPBS President
